The beaches & surf regions of San Juan del Sur...
Maderas Beach
20 min north of San Juan del Sur. The most consistent beach surf break in the area but also the most frequented. Two main peaks offer rights and lefts up to 2 meters. The waves are very shallow at low tide but can close, whereas at high tide the waves are longer.
Remanso Beach
15 min south of San Juan del Sur. The second most consistent beach waves in the area. A large sheltered bay with three peaks offering long hollow and tense rights and lefts, but which may lack power compared to Maderas.
Hermosa Beach
25 min south of San Juan del Sur. A large beach where the paid fee ($3 per person) gives you access to facilities (hammocks, tables, restaurants, beach volleyball courts, & showers). Hermosa's beach break has long and tense waves, but the spot requires more swell than Remanso and saturates quite quickly. It can get quite busy but the many peaks allow you to surf almost alone.
Yankee Beach
35 min south of San Juan. A long sandy beach, with paid access but no amenities. There are several peaks including the one located to the south which produces a hollow bowl. The hollow and long lefts and short and powerful rights and are close to the rocks which fix the sand. This peak can quickly be found when it is functioning well.
Explore the Tola Region...
Colorado Beach
Formerly known as Hacienda Iguana, the beach is located at the mouth of the river and is one of the best beach breaks in Nicaragua. The waves are hollow and powerful, ideal for endless tubes. The skill level of surfers here is high - a great spot to watch all the action. The private property in front of the beach prohibits direct access to the beach, so you have to get there by boat or on foot from El Gigante Beach. It works best to arrive at mid-tide, on the upright. Be careful, the backwash at high tide can be destabilizing!
Popoyo Beach
There are three wave features at Popoyo. The first is a long soft left - ideal for beginners and long-boarders. The second is an outer reef, primarily for professionals and very experienced surfers. In another left, which breaks on the rocks, surfers can hold waves of more than 4 meters. And finally a third feature, a wave that breaks on a slab and unrolls on a foundation of sand and rock. The powerful wave forms a bowl on which you can go on the long left or tub on the right. This beach area can get very busy.
Manzanillo Beach
Features a hollow point break on a sandy bottom fixed by rocks. A rare and magical wave, which requires a big southerly swell to operate. The private property in front of the spot prohibits direct access by the beach, so you have to go by boat. Works best at mid-tide, on the upright.
San Juan del Sur
The town was discovered by the Spaniard - Andrés Niño in 1522 while he was looking for a passage to reach Lake Nicaragua. In the 19th century, the port was of great importance during the gold rush when future gold diggers sailed to San Francisco.
The city offers easy access to Nicaragua's best beaches, while still offering waves ideal for surfing and consistent dry, sunny weather. Colorful Victorian houses and the warmth of the locals give the city a unique atmosphere.
The bay of San Juan, dominated by the statue of Jesus Christ (24 meters high) offers splendid sunsets. All these qualities make it an ideal place to put down your suitcases & backpacks to enjoy the many activities and explore the country.
San Juan’s reputation as a party town is well established, Nicaraguans and tourists alike enjoy Central America’s most relaxed evenings. The Sunday Funday pub crawl is very popular with visitors whereby three hotels with swimming pools welcome revelers every Sunday for a pool party - the legend & memories made - extends far beyond the borders of the country. San Juan del Sur offers countless activities to a wide range of visitors - locals, travellers & expats.

Masaya Volcano
The Masaya Volcano - National Park encompasses a unique volcanic complex which was created following the explosion of the El Ventarròn super volcano. The complex consists of three craters, one of which emits smoke and whose lava is sometimes visible.
Explore the large caldera complete with caves that allow entry into the hardened lava flow and a lagoon. From the top of the volcano, the 360-degree panorama reveals the capital city - Managua, Granada and Lake Nicaragua, the Isletas, the Montbatcho volcano, and Ometepe island. The site is easily accessible (there is an entrance fee of approximately $4 per person). You can even park your vehicle at the top of the crater. Aim for the late afternoon to enjoy the monumental sunset over the region.
